Easy smoked chicken dry rub

This easy smoked chicken dry rub can be made in just minutes and adds incredible flavor to chicken thighs, chicken wings, and my favorite, whole chicken. Using a few basic ingredients you probably have at home, you can make this rub in no time and save a trip to the grocery store.

Whether your grilling or smoking, the combination of spices are a perfect blend that will take your chicken recipes to the next level.

Why make homemade dry rub?

Store bought rubs are so expensive for what you get. Don’t get me wrong, I still use them. But making homemade rub is life changing! The ingredients are fresh and with just a few dollars you can make a huge batch.

Making the spice rub at home also allows you to customize and experiment with different seasonings until you can develop a good rub that fits your cooking style. 

Ingredients you will need: 

Smoked Paprika 

Brown Sugar

​Salt flakes or kosher salt 

Black Pepper 

Dried Thyme 

Garlic Powder

Onion Powder

How to make homemade chicken rub 

In a medium sized bowl combine all of the ingredients and mix together to combine. You can use this right away and get great flavor the next time you are cooking chicken. 

How to store

Place rub in an airtight container like a mason jar or shaker jar and place in a cool, dry place for up to a month.

Variations: 

Feel free to experiment with different seasonings and spices to customize your own personal preference.  

Want it spicy? Add chili powder or cayenne pepper.

Like it sweet? Add more brown sugar. 

Is savory your thing? Try dried herbs like oregano and rosemary.

Ingredients

  • 4 tablespoons smoked paprika
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 3 tablespoons salt flakes or kosher salt
  • 2 tablespoons black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon dried thyme 
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder 
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder 

Instructions

  1. Combine all ingredients together in a medium sized bowl. Stir well to incorporate. 
  2. Store in an airtight container like a mason jar in a cool, dry place.
